A Long Goodbye – Memory of Mike
By The Orange Phoenix on July 7, 2009 @ 5:30 pm

For MJ
When you got your assignment from the spiritual realm above,
you took yours seemingly with no complaints –
the cost of being a living version of love
the slings and arrows of gross injustices
and at times
outweighed the patience that lived within your work
would you do it all over again?
If knowing that the cost of being human -
Loving,
Breathing and
Plain ol’ living
would be at the detriment of yourself
Would you do it all over again?
Would you’re smile be as far reaching,
Your innocence a source of regret
Or would you step into sequined gloves
& patent leather pennies
And love all over again?
Would you?
Could you?
Long lyrical improvisations
rewound inside the plastic of my cassette tape;
Burning a belief in mankind in myself
would you do it all over again?
I smiled as I listen
to a faint “yes” -
to remember the time
and know that you found a friend in me.
I am calm when I remember
And hope that your choice to love
springs a world anew –
Goodbye.

Thank you so much for writing this. I’ve been very saddened by his loss. I spent my childhood listening to all his songs over and over on my record player and Walkman.
He was a remarkable man and was terribly wronged time and again. We will never see a man this gifted and generous again.
nice tribute, orange phoenix. it is still very shocking, i can’t believe MJ is dead. that doesn’t make sense.
It felt like time stopped – the clouds rolled over and the gods fought -
and his number was called.
I had to remember him in the only way I know how –
words.
I was SHOCKED when I heard the news.
