WTF

It’s Not Always About Black History Month

Thank you, 2008, for giving us an extra day for Black History Month. It is greatly appreciated. Not sure if anyone has learned anything new about Black people and the history that Black people have made in America and across the world but the month is still appreciated by many.

While attending a seminar the other day I came across a photography exhibit. (Side Note: If you know me and read the blog on a regular then you know I’ve got a thing for photography.) I couldn’t help but to stop and take notice. While perusing the visual offerings, a couple walked up behind me.

Exhibit

The couple appeared to be on a date, as the building was servicing many groups and events. The lady companion, who appeared in awe of the exhibit blurted, “Oh, this must be a tribute to Black History Month.” I couldn’t help but to look at her and her companion. The man and I locked eyes and then I brought my attention to her and responded, “No. It’s a tribute to a Jazz Photographer hence, the board explaining the exhibit at the end of the hallway. Not to mention, collectively, there are a total of five white people in the photos.” I said all this with a smile, chuckling inside, not wanting to burst out laughing at her ignorance. She then responded, “Oh, I guess if I looked at the rest of the pictures I would have known this. I’m so sorry.”

I nodded, “No apology necessary. Just knowing you are here and appreciating the art is enough for me.” I looked at the man and thought: he has his work cut out for him.

Lesson Learned: Just because you are in an establishment that is featuring photos of black people during Black History Month doesn’t make it a tribute to black history.

Later, she will find out that the photographer is actually a Jew.
