LOL @ Urban Thought’s comment. So true! My take is, if you’re breaking up, what’s the difference from a text and a phone call? They can still scream obscenities to you afterwards. LOL… Try doing it face to face… That’s more of a challenge!

I agree with you Urban. Although, text messaging is great for general purposes…it works great, especially for students because you never know when your friend is in class or not. However, breaking up with someone should either be done in person or on the phone.

I just broke up with my girlfriend (we dated over a year and broke up, but got back together this last summer). It was hard and she hates me for it, but I wanted her to have a great first year at college. When we first dated and I was at college I felt like I missed out on a lot of things since I had a girlfriend back home. I felt that it was best for her to enjoy her first year…have fun…and make the best of it. We agreed over summer that it would best to be friends and talk everyday, but once the time came she got mad at me… We haven’t talked for about 2 weeks now? Bleh..

You girls make things complicated!!

Text messaging is great! Definately not the way to break up though. Once a girlfriend broke up with my via email, so I can understand the difficulty in that as well. I will say, however, our world is becoming so impersonal. More specifically in America. Think about your friends on mySpace or Facebook. Are these your really friends or just “internet” frineds? Text messaging and email will continue to make interpersonal communications less personal.

I agree with you. SMS is weak. Shows no emotional courage.

I have heard of people getting marriage proposals via SMS but maybe that’s an urban myth. If breaking up OVER THE PHONE is considered insensitive, I would think that breaking up over SMS is even worse.

Yes, I would think that if you dated someone over a year, you have had an emotional investment. Honor it. AT LEAST call the person.

Also, if there is any type of “break up etiquette” (blech) I would say don’t break up in public (not over dinner or something) and perhaps at the person’s home.

I am guessing we’re not talking about breaking up with some emotionally disturbed person where you want to be out of the blast zone.

The same goes for breaking up over any of those instant messaging/chat services, emails, notes on social networking services all that. Weak. Very weak. If you call, don’t leave it as a voice mail, either.

I hope this was theoretical question??
