If a blog had a birthday then today would mark Urban Observation becoming one year old.
One year has gone by since I started blogging. I thought maybe a light bulb would go off in my head on how to address the anniversary that I thought would never come. Trying to put thoughts on paper isn’t as easy as thinking them. Does that sound odd to you? I went to one of my fellow blogger for advice. She told me to put the topics I wanted to discuss on paper, figure out where I was a year ago versus where I am now (if that isn’t what she said then that is how I translated it).
Looking back at my first post was something I haven’t done since I hit that publish button way back then. The topic was easy to remember only because of the date - 9/11. The day was a time of reflection. Many of us were sharing stories on where we were and what we experienced.
REMEMBER THEN
That Tuesday of 2001, I found myself taking the usual route to work. Emerging from the bowels of the city into what ended up leaving me with an eerie feeling. It wasn’t like any other day I’ve experienced.
Midtown was some what still compared to normal. People standing around looking up at all the big screens that adorn the skyscrapers of Times Square. It was unusual to see so many people standing idle and in awe (if the combination is at all possible, it was that day.) Looking up at the screens, I thought someone was a filming of a movie. Then a honk of a horn brought me back to some sort of reality, standing midway in the street about to be run over by a FedEx truck. As I stepped to the curb, I realized all the express delivery trucks were heading to their depots on the West side. This day changed life, as we knew it forever.
BLOGGING
As I went through the day to day of my blogging, I didn’t have a focus on what I wanted to cover. My friend told me that I have to find my niche. Stick to content that is consistent and make sure you post every day or you will lose your audience. I didn’t have an audience to begin with. How was I supposed to get an audience? Why would they keep coming back? Why was I blogging?

It’s funny how so many of the blogs I follow started out in Sept 2006. It’s like we all went to school together and are marching on in lockstep! Congratulations on sticking with it. I read somewhere that the average lifespan of a blog is 3 months. Probably as long as most people stick with a new year’s resolution to work out, quit smoking or any new thing!
Happy First Year.
I was saying the same thing to one of my coworkers regarding the blogging boom. If we are in the same school then I am proud to be apart of your class.
Thank you. I didn’t expect to keep it up but I try to stick to it. I’ve been so busy lately though that I haven’t been able to write much. But that is another story for another day.
Cheers to you as I know you’ve crossed the milestone as well.
Happy Birthday. Sorry I haven’t been around.
Happy late birthday! I agree with what Ms. Q said, except I started mine during Christmas break last year!
Enemy of the Republic: Thank you very much. No worries. I’m not going anywhere so any visit you make will be appreciated.
Gregg: Thx buddy.
You know someone told me that I should stick to one thing and write about that everyday or else I would never get an audience but I am too scattered to make that work and that’s not the only way to make it work. Glad you do a little of everything and hope there are many more years of blogging to come for you. 9/11 was an awful day that is burned into my mind even though I was not in NYC. I can only imagine how it musthave been to actually BE in Manhattan.
Happy aniversary and many more to come urban.
