Indeed, we all need that support system. After listening to him I realize that maternal love is abscent in some people. Shame on her.

For him to stay on a clear path of success with so many obstructions originating from his birth mother I can only think that this young man is bound for greatness.

Wow. Jamal sounds like an impressive young man. He must have other people who believe in him because it's very difficult to move forward, to have self-belief when there is no one telling you, "We believe in you." I'm not saying it's impossible but when you're a child, it's well, your birthright to expect unconditional love and support from your parents. By unconditional I don't mean you're not getting punished for misbehaving or doing wrong but you are being accepted for who you are.

I can't even imagine parents, much less a mother, telling her own child she doesn't love them, never wanted them. I can't imagine being in that position.

The fact that Jamal remains optimistic must be due to his "Ghetto Angels" - people who are providing him with the love and support that he needs. Reading a post like this furthers my belief that groups like "Big Brother" can really change a child's life.

When you're a child, you need someone who believes in you before you can believe in yourself.
