One Man’s Flower is Another Man’s Weed

MOM: Come on, let’s go!
CHILD: But I want to play with the flowers.
MOM: They’ll be here when you get back.

If you could only see the joy in this child’s face as he was playing in the grass, messing with what he thought to be flowers.

If you never made it out of the ghetto you too would think it was a flower. If you own a home in the suburbs you’d consider it a weed. Yes, it’s every gardener’s favorite friend, the dandelion.

When the dandelions sprouted out of the ground you knew that summer was here and it was time to play outside. Growing up in the PJ’s during my youth, we would pick these “flowers” and make bouquets to give to moms when she got home (I know it’s cheesy but I was young). Of course my mother knew it was just a weed and told me, “I appreciate you doing it but don’t ever bring me a weed another day in your life.” The very next day we went to the ultimate garden. You know which one that is right? The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. If you ever want to learn about flowers that would be the place to go. They have every one of them you can possible think about growing out of the ground in such a busy city. I had a field day just learning about plants.

In another life I would have been a horticulturalist. When I returned to the place I called home I’d hang out in the big field (big green patch with trees and bushes). I never went inside the apartment empty handed. Let me mother tell it and she’d say, “you used to bring a bunch of leaves in the house and just start looking up the tree types and then you’d never shut up about it.”

I have a thing for the outdoors. What can I tell you? I love nature. Always have.

This is the perfect time for anyone to take the time to appreciate the many places in the big city. Instead of that little boy thinking those dandelions are flowers he needs to take a trip to the Botanical Gardens.

Another place to go would be the Bronx Zoo. This way he won’t sit there thinking the rats, squirrels, and pigeons he comes across are the only animals out there. Another cool place would be the New York Aquarium. I’m sure that gold fish he has at home in that little bowl wouldn’t come close to anything he may discover at the Aquarium.

I thank moms for not letting me lead a sheltered life. I only made that mistake once and she set me straight.
