Joe: Ain’t Nothing Like Me - And He’s Right

It has been a minute since I have heard some new Joe, is what Nas says as he does the intro for the first track off of Joe’s album Ain’t Nothing Like Me released on Jive Records. And, can I say that it is a fitting title for Joe. One of the last R&B dudes with some sort of class and a greater respect for women. As I have done with the Monica CD I will do the same with Joe. Track by Track, I will break it down on how I feel about this new venture from Joe.

  1. Get To Know Me (featuring Nas) - Set to a familiar track used by the featured rapper on this set, Nas. Joe is asking you to come over and get to know him. And if any woman was in her right mind, she would do just that. Get to know him as this track is smooth, pleasant and not at all telling me quit while you are ahead.
  2. If I Was Your Man - The beat sounds familiar (reminiscent of something Janet might have had a hold on, lets hope all his beats are not recycled). This is the ‘come back to me’ track. I messed up, we been through so much. And now I am telling you I know I put you through it but please come back. Life with me is better (and if you d not think so I will show you). Everyone has these types of tracks but Joe does it better.
  3. I Want Her - This is the ‘I am gonna take you from your man’ song. If Joe wants you - he is going to take you. What is your man going to do about it? Nothing, cause Joe’s got you on lock. He cannot do for you what Joe can do for you. Females like this type of song. Every female, worth having, has that one dude she is going to leave her man for. So, why the hell not sing about it?
  4. Where You At? - This track is what’s up. For those smooth but upbeat moments in the club, that have that nice thump in the back that you can grind against your girl with. Baby, Where You At? Joe wants to know. Why you have this brother looking for you? Joe sings it. I am listening, I am liking. And then Papoose comes through with his 16 bars (not sure if its 16. I am sure its fewer). He does his thing and is on point as always. I hope Joe finds whoever he is looking for. Where You at?
  5. My Love - This is slow, this is mellow. It is OK. It is not a bad track. A piano-laced track with smooth vocals. Reminds me of a slow Sunday song or that Quiet Storm moment. My love is yours is what he is telling the lady of the night. OK. I have to skip this track as I am ready to find someone to make a baby with.
  6. Go Hard - So here is the story; Joe has a girl. He sees some badass chick that he wants. So you know Joe is going to Go Hard, leave his girl and get this woman to be his. Searching for that superstar. Having to get that taste of that female that he has never actually met but would leave his girl to get at this stranger. Hmmm, makes no sense but these are the stupid things us men do. Hey, it makes for good music. And well, it is the truth. So why not?
  7. Ain’t Nothin’ Like Me (Featuring Tony Yayo & Young Buck) - Title track. It is a cool track. Nothing to write home about. But I could be wrong. He did not introduce himself. No worries. I am going to skip this track now. I am bored with it. It only has 21 seconds left on it anyway.
  8. It’s Me - Oh yeah, redemption. You should be here with me when the R&B crooner lets out. This track is about change. The words are beautiful. He has shaped up and now he wants to say I am sorry. So we should call this, the makeup song. Because it is not you, it iss him. Its Joe’s fault. He did not give you enough love and he cheated. But now, he wants you back. Great track.
  9. Let’s Just Do It (Featuring Fabolous) - A Cool & Dre-produced track. I know this cause they tell you in the beginning. I do not like a bragging producer. Your music, your product, your work can stand alone without you shouting yourself out. I do not know why this reminds me of a track Justin Timberlake would have sang for a Timberland track but it’s all good.
  10. Feel For You - This is a slow jam and it is a banger. Loving the words. Enjoying the flow. What can I tell you: This track was made for Kiss FM. Where quality R&B plays. This track is just one more reason to purchase the CD. This dude is down for the ride til the end of time, his words not mine. This is the I declare all my love to you song. Your Love is Like a Song I want to sing. Can lyrics get any better than that? Poetry set to a nicely produced track. Oh, Where is wifey? I love you, girl.
  11. Just Relax (Featuring Dre) - Recycling is the theme here and this time around it is a Tribe Called Quest old school beat (that girl, Bonita Apple-something). Listening to this track makes me want to do the running man. Cool and flowing, enjoying the vocals and the production work. Joe’s saying, It ain’t nothing nice. But I am enjoying it.
  12. Love Is Just a Game - OK. This starts off with some harmonizing, reminiscent of Boys II Men. Love Is Just a Game but Joe is not playing on this track. And I’m not mad at all. Joe believes in love but whoever this silly female he is talking about is, she is throwing him out cause she is tired and not willing to stick it out. Joe feels different though. If you love me, you will make it work. But she is full of games and Joe realizes it may not be for him to stay.
  13. You Should Know Me - The title speaks for itself. It sounds like pre-New Jack Swing. This girl should know him after spending so much time. Why question the dude? He would not let you down. At least that is what he wants you to believe. Are you going to believe him? Nice track. Do not care to hear it on the radio but I will not be mad if they release it as a single.
  14. Life of the Party - I do not want to believe that it is over, is what Joe is singing. And I am sad to say this is the last track and, I too do not want to believe that it is over. But it is. This is a great track to close out what is the best R&B album to hit the music scene in some time. I will not explain the premise of the song. You will just have to get it for yourself. This track is # 1 from where I sit. But someone out there will disagree.

R&B is officially back and Joe is bringing it to you. Not a ho, bitch, slut or hood chick mentioned in any song on this album. Thuggin or niggerish lingo are absent as well. Even the rappers keep it clean. Why cannot we have more music like this? Baby-making music with class.
