So with summer finally trying to make an appearance, what games did you play to pass the time?
Me, I was a Tag and Hopscotch girl! Others I know were double dutchers. Their legs pump as fast as possible so you didn’t get beat with the telephone wire. Yes, I grew up in the hood. When we got thirsty somebody’s cousin or uncle would come out with that big ol’ wrench and open the nearby hydrant and it would be drinks galore!
So what happen to these lovely childhood memories? Gameboy, PSP’s, DVD players, iPods and the like.
I look at my younger sibling, part of Generation Y(Y is your fat ass sitting in front of that computer all day when it’s 85 degrees outside?!), and I wonder what happen to that ol’ toy imagination? When did imagination get put on a dusty shelf next to 8-tracks, LP’s and cassette tapes? Why is imagination 50 pounds overweight eating McDonald’s everyday? Why is imagination weeping?
It isn’t just me wondering - check out this article.

What great memories! I read an article somewhere about how a bunch of kids were taken to a park and were a bit lost at what to do at first and then began to use their imagination and had a great time. But when asked if they would like to do it again, they weren’t so up for it - no outlets! Being outside with nothing but their imagination was only enough novelty to last a day.
What was the game called, the one where you string rubber bands together, a person holding either end (or one end tied to a post) and you jump over it, wrap your leg around it all sorts of tricks?
Hmmm… I don’t know. I’ll have to ask around and get back to you. But it does sound fun.
I used to love hanging out on the block playing games such as hop-scotch, tag, re-lay racing, and almost everyday double-dutch.
It’s sad to see the changes that have taken place. As a parent I believe it is our responsibility to encourage our children to go outside and play. Turn the t.v.’s off get creative and yes, let our imaginations sore.
Thanks for the post. Loved taking a trip down memory lane!
I found out what that “rubber band” game was called: Chinese Jump Rope!

It’s not quite as I used to play it (and I was a klutz) but it’s close…
Oh word… That’s what’s up… I asked around too… Everyone knew what I was talking about but didn’t know the name. Thx for letting me know.
I miss my childhood.
