Name Calling: When Does It All Stop

Understand this people, “Not everyone likes to be called ‘nigger,’ ‘nigga,’ ‘negro.’” Not all women can sit back and relax as you call her a’bitch’ or ‘ho.’

It doesn’t matter what your background is. It doesn’t matter where you come from. It doesn’t matter who you hang with. It just isn’t cool to call people out their names.

I was called a nigga the other day by someone who is just as dark as me. Did it feel good? Not at all. Did I tell this person about themselves? You best believe it. Just because you’re Black, Brown, or call yourself a minority (which is another word I have a problem with) doesn’t mean you get a pass to call me a Nigga (Nigger).

We have Russell Simmons coming out and trying to kill off the word from being used in lyrics within songs, calling on Radio Stations to put a ban on the usage, calling on artist to keep it out of their speech. One thing about Russell that I’m not very appreciative is that he may be the one to have a hand in the reason of its usage.

Russell founded Def Jam. Under his leadership Run DMC, Slick Rick, LL Cool J have all flourished. There are plenty of other artists I can name who have played for Def Jam directly and under imprints. Either way the words ‘Bitch,’ ‘Nigger’ (Nigga), and ‘Ho’ have been used by plenty of artists under his watch.

So is the Godfather of Hip-Hop wrong for coming out so late against such hateful words? Action has to happen at some point. A stand needs to be made. Outside of Russell you have Sharpton. As an ambulance chaser, Sharpton doesn’t have much credibility in White society. Most intelligent black people I speak to question his motives. But still, someone has to take action.

ONE MAN CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE
As I remember Michael Knight and the voiceover from that show with the talking car, one man can make a difference. Maybe Russell will be that man. Yes, freedom of speech is in question. But people have to draw the line between freedom of speech and disrespect.

Hip-Hop Has Influence
Hip-Hop has been embraced by many. It has crossed over to the homes of suburban White people. So when they hear the word ‘nigga,’ ‘bitch’ and ‘ho’ being used so freely within the music, they are naturally going to think this is cool, hype, happening. They want to be down. So they’ll use it too. Doesn’t mean they get a pass to use it though. You say it in the wrong company and you may get your ass beat down.

Let’s hope change is upon us for we need much of it. This world needs saving. One person, one thought, one action at a time.
