Columbus Day: What is it good for?
By Urban Thought on October 9, 2006 @ 12:34 pm
I’m all for holidays when it gives me a day off to do what ever I want. But today isn’t one of those days.
Here in the states we are celebrating Columbus Day. The celebration consists of closing all the schools and banks. As I made clear I don’t have the luxury. I’m not even sure what he did to warrant a holiday.
The benefits are few. Less people are on the train during rush hour. The department stores get another excuse for a sale. The downside is that the banks are closed. Well, not all the bank. Commerce Bank, one of the best banks in NYC, is open today.
So a special shout out goes to Commerce Bank, Macy’s and The City of New York for keeping the kids off the subways for one more day.
