Working in customer service can be a very rewarding experience no matter what type of venue (i.e. McDonald’s, Gap, Starbucks, or an MTA booth worker). You’ll learn a great deal about people and how they act or you’ll learn about yourself and how you react.
Sharing your smile or giving a warm greeting can change someone’s day for the better (at least that is what is said). On the other hand, giving quick answers and flat responses can have the opposite effect.
One evening I had the opportunity to greet an individual who appeared to be annoyed by everything. So it was my immediate response to show her as much respect and warmth as possible. Working these types of jobs you don’t get everyone’s name so you may end up calling them Madame, miss, or young lady. If you are a much older woman I will say young lady.
In most cases you get a positive response, not today. This woman I called young lady responded by telling me she is not young. Now I know I’m not blind. Even Ray Charles could tell that she was no PYT. I’m not sure what she was offended about. She wasn’t young and didn’t act like a lady. Maybe that was her problem. She is old and was acting like a crab.
Next time I will refer to her as old crab. It was fitting to what she emoted.
