Survivor: Cook Islands: Cooking up trouble?

09.16.06 | User ImageUrban Thought | Comment?

Are the folks at CBS and Mark Burnett Productions cooking up trouble?

America is seen as a melting pot or more so referred to as one; we are actually a salad bowl. Why a salad bowl and not a melting pot? In a melting pot everything looks the same. This is truly not the case here in the USA or NYC for that matter. What you have is a salad bowl where all the ingredients are clearly visible and some what distinguishable.

Survivor: Cook Islands (can I say it was the proper name for such a concept) separates the groups according to ethnicity (as if we don’t do that on our own) and puts it right in your face for our viewing pleasure. Would this be for the sake of ratings? Trying to find that new Black, Asian, Hispanic audience? Indeed, they will get just that. There are many who are watching just because its setup this way. After all when you put groups of folks together such we always rout for our home team.

Through all this with the White people now being the minority on the island we can only wonder who will win the ultimate prize. In true “Survivor” fashion at some point everyone will be mixed, it will no longer be about race. After all, one person will win the prize. I just hope we don’t have a Jarvis situation where a non-white gets voted off because they are winning every challenge. As a society we are bigger than that, right?

So what do we do now? Stay tuned and let the game run its course. And we will see what we all know; “only the strong survive.”

P.S. In true fashion of a good horror picture the first to go happens to be a black man. Who would of thunk it?
